The History of ONT

In 1941, the City of Ontario purchased 470 acres surrounding the airport and approved the construction of runways which would soon be used to help support military efforts during WWII. By 1946, the airport was renamed Ontario International Airport because of transpacific cargo flights originating from the airport and commercial service began within the next three years. Since it’s early beginning, the airport has now grown to serve over 4 million passengers annually and operate under its own authority.

Benefitting the Local Economy

ONT has an annual economic impact of $5.4 billion. Of this, $413 million is generated by aviation activity on or near the airport, $1.5 billion is generated off-airport by expenditures related to the use of aviation services, and $3.5 billion is generated by money that is re-spent and circulated through the local economy. More than 7,690 jobs, directly attributable to ONT, are located on the airport. An additional 55,000 jobs, spread throughout the region, are indirectly attributable to ONT. Each year the airport contributes over $246 million in state and local taxes to the local economy.

Get into the Green Scene

Dedicated in September 1998, the LA/Ontario International Airport (ONT) complex is a model in energy efficiency. Designed with energy conservation in mind, ONT's two terminals feature windows made from a special energy-efficient glass. The building systems also distribute maximum lighting without radiating heat throughout the building. Other energy-efficient fixtures and systems are also used throughout the airport.
