About IYK

The Inyokern was originally established as Kern County’s “Airport No. 8” in 1935 connecting the Indian Wells Valley farming community to the outside world. The future growth of the airport was set into motion in 1943 by a university professor and a Naval officer flying over the Mojave Desert seeking a place to stage a joint rocket program during World War II. Their forward-thinking led to the evolution from a modest airstrip in a rural community to expanding to support extensive air and land ranges and laboratories now known as China Lake, hosting film crews for everything from commercials to major motion pictures, assisting in military and high-tech testing operations, and supporting manned and unmanned flight. The airport, owned and operated by the Indian Wells Valley Airport District, anticipates commuter service returning to the airport in the first quarter of 2017.
